Elvis Impersonators
I've just heard the news that a ban is about to be placed on Elvis impersonators.
This is almost too silly to even comment about, but I'm sure for the thousands of people who make a living out of portraying the king, it's very serious.
Robert Stilleman, who owns American Idol, has just bought a majority stake in Elvis Presley Enterprises, which controls the name and likeness of Elvis. Stilleman has apparently announced his intention to impose the ban.
Firstly, what an appalling concept is the idea that you can own someone else's name and likeness. It sounds a bit like selling your soul to the devil, only I doubt that the transaction has ever involved Elvis himself. Apparently, he's dead. I think that the music, the image and the whole culture surrounding Elvis should belong to everyone.
Secondly, what a miserable, greedy, joyless world must we be living in when someone can just decide to ban something which is just a lot of fun for a lot of people.
Above all, it just doens't make sense. I would have thought that it's the Elvis impersonators who keep interest in Elvis alive, and keep the profits flowing.
