Training a cat yo use his litter box

How can you train a cat to stop going to the bathroom throughout the house and to use the litter box instead?

If a cat is going to the bathroom throughout the house, first have him checked by your veterinarian to make sure that he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. Once that has been ruled out, try confining the cat to a small area like a bathroom or cat carrier, making certain that the cat has a litter box, food, and water. You can slowly increase the amount of space allowed to the cat once he starts successfully using the litter box. Make sure that you're consistent and, if a mistake occurs, go back a step and repeat the process.

This training approach can be applied for dogs? I have a chinese sharpei and everytime he needs to go for a litter he barks so loud, and when he's successfull catching our attention what we do is take him for a walk down to the bushes its quite an irritating routine especially that chinese sharpei's are not really like the other dogs that can do long walks they get dead tired easily. Any advice?
