Can cats get heartworms?

Like dogs, cats can get heartworms too. Heartworm disease results when a cat is bitten by an infected mosquito. This mosquito, on biting the cat, deposits baby heartworms into the bloodstream where they grow and then live in the right side of the heart once they've reached maturity. There is no treatment for heartworms in cats. A monthly heartworm preventative, such as Heartgard or Interceptor, should be given to your cat throughout the year to prevent heartworms, and yearly blood tests should be performed by you veterinarian to check for heartworm disease.
