PHP row count

hi,
I am writing a query in my php code for getting some rows from database. I want to count record fetch by that query.

When i am trying to execute this query

select *, count(*) from mytable

then it shows error.

Can anyone suggest solution for this problem?

I also tried following query -

select * from mytable

and after that i was using odbc_num_rows($rs) to get record count.

But it is showing result -1 , instead of exact record count for the query.
