Do I need a light weight laptop?
What do I have to give up in terms of specifications in ultraportables?
1) Ultraportables are usually below 12inches. Usually ultraportables will loose out in terms of graphics card, less ports, slower clock speed(though for duo core, this is not true).
2) Another disadvantage of small laptop is the smaller screen size of 12 to 13.3" inches.
Only 14" screen or above allows SXGA+(1400 x 1024) or UXGA (1600 x 1200) resolution. 12.1" can only cater up to 1024 x 768 or 1280x800(wide screen) max.
High resolution is required for viewing and editing high quality photos/graphics. For eg, an UXGA resolution of 1600 x 1200 is actually equivalent to 2Mega Pixels photo. Thus with this resolution, one will be able to see ALL the pixels capture up to 2 Mega Pixels.
3) Some complain that the fonts size of a 12" laptop is too small, thus you might like to test out the font size and see whether you can accept it.
4) A heavy bigger laptop also allows more room for heat dissipation, thus better components which consumes more power can be built in.
5) If you need to bring the laptop around often, and do only light gaming, an ultraportable is usually good enough.
