What makes a friend a friend?

I was curious as to what actually makes a friend a friend? I mean is it the fact that you can divulge your inner most working to them? Is it that you would do anything for them and never expect anything in return. Or is it more like a mutual 50/50 deal?

Also what makes one friend better than another? I know that I hate having to decide who I am going to hang out with one day because my other friend doesn't like my one friend ya know what I am saying.

Anyhow what do you think a friend really means?

It seems that ur confusing yourself with these type of questions. If ur searchin fr a good friends then u must remember that "A friend in need is a friend indeed". Yes you can not make people work or think the way you like. You also hv to make some kind of adjustments.
If you feel problem in deciding to which you should hang then u must ask frm your heart which would be the better. Its not that difficult we can not make all people like. Somebody would hv to be far frm you. Its difficult but its you only who can help you.

I think if both of your friends (the ones who hate each other) really cared about you they wouldn't mind sharing you. Even if you friends would never hang out with each other they should at least be willing to let you be friends with each of them.

other friend ; might have good reasons in that case you'd have to

understand...

Hi!

A Friend could be anyone, you have friends at school, work, home (sibling), neighborhood and so on.

To be a friend there aren't many requirement, just that you are interested in the friendship.

I think the question should be 'What makes a friend a Good/Great Friend' don't you think?

heheh, actually I'm really lost, I mean I had these great beliefs about friendship, but they all seem to have been illussions, so I'm re-arranaging my thoughts on friendhip & friends.

Great question isnt it.... emmmmm well a friend is any1 be it young or old someone whom you can talk to without worrying that you will be told off, shouted at or.... all the rigmaroll tht comes with it. Here in simple words
a friend is a friend because he/she is someone who can.....

It seems that ur demanding far tooo much from a friend. If you want that many things in a single person then it may not meet you.
I think friend is a friend who understands the feeling of his/her friend, who understands a phrase "To err is a human" and most important that he/she must have the patience to cope with -ve points of his/her friend.

I mean that type of friend is what i m looking for.

Yeah it is not good to expect much from your friends. When they do something very easy, little and insignificant from your point of view why don't you ask yourself maybe that is the most they can do, maybe they did a lot and that was real much for them. I think sometimes we like some people because we just feel they have something special that make them friends. From all that simran1 mentioned I guess the most important is the care that friends show. Because sometimes when we can not get along on some topics with our friends but we care for them we are not going to spoil the friendship because of something small and not so important and when we care enough we are going to save our comment sometimes not to hurt and find the best way to say when we see something wrong we do not like. When there is a care and respect between friends and a limit that you never pass over there will be a friendship as well.

friends, you loose some, you gain some, i can say one is my friend if i can be myself when i'm with them. i don't have to pretend to be one of the group. i am just 'me'.

a friend is a friend if even after a stormy weather
...he/she is still there to see you through the good & the bad...

its rare to find true friends, sometimes it takes you years to find those real gems

A friend is not someone who will bail you out of jail but the person with you in the cell after the incident going "That was hella fun, let's do it again!"

but for closeness
of the hearts
without the lonliness
but to start
the relationship
between the two

I wrote this at 16 and have found it a very good guidline to follow.

Once you start the relationship, You really have to be, aware of feelings,emotions,experiences to understand them to stay.
BE TRUE to them and yourself
Show concern and listen
You will receive it back from your TRUEST friends.

A friend is someone who is supportive and stands the test of time. Often , life takes us away from our friends, we move away, get new jobs, get married basically the hectic ness of life’s gets the better of us. Yet true friends are ones that we can call even if we haven’t seen them in months and they will be their for us and it would be like no time has passed. Friends have no ulterior motives, and are genuinely happy when you are, and sad when you are not. They won’t say ‘I told you so’ or lecture you when you make mistakes, yet they will provide you with a shoulder to cry on and a supportive ear. They will forgive you when you are wrong. it may sound like we're asking too much of our friends, but, these are what friends do for us..
we may not be aware it all, but they really do these for us..

friends are the ones you can talk to when you're feeling a bit down and low..
they're the ones that'll cheer you up..

friends might let you down sometimes, but they always seem to find ways to make it up to you, no matter what..
and when we, in turn, let them down, they are and will always be ready to forgive and forget..
they are the ones you can party with and celebrate with when u've done something good..
they'll be the ones who can drink with you (but they'll try not to get drunk for you) when u have problems and listen to u intently when you blurt out all these problems (specially when ur drunk already) til dawn..

i've definitely found my true friends, and i'd like to share this video one of them made for all of us..
