When your friends get drunk it lowers their guard and you learn a lot of things about them that you normally wouldn't. This isn't necessarily a good thing though.
If your friend does reveal something as extreme as a desire to commit suicide while drunk-you should probably suggest or bring up the topic of seeking help when they get sober again. Something like that may also be contributing to their alcoholism.
