Are there any particular vitamins or mineral supplements ...
Question:
Are there any particular vitamins or mineral supplements that may help women to conceive? Or is it just getting your body up to a healthy level of something you may be missing, such as magnesium, for instance?
Answers:
In general, the recommendation is that if women are maintaining a healthy dietary lifestyle and taking multivitamins or prenatal vitamins, they are getting all they need. They must have 400 mg of folic acid every day to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. And if they have a history of neural tube defect, then they should be on a higher dose. But in general, there are no specific recommendations for other specific supplements.
With the herbal preparations, patients need to be cautious. We don't have a lot of data on their effects fertility or on pregnancy. As a general voice of caution, I would advise a women not to rely on a lot of herbal preparations that are purported to enhance fertility. We don't know what impact they will have. There is not good data to go on.
