I am on Paxil CR. Will this affect my chances of becoming pregnant?
Answers:
There is limited data, as best I know, regarding all of the antidepressants in pregnancy. Certainly there is a fair amount of evidence that Prozac is safe. Generally I recommend that a patient talk with her doctor and ask if the one they are on is the best for their condition. If they can switch to one for which we have more information, that would be good. So if they need to be on the antidepressants for major depressive disorder, you weigh the risks and benefits. If you have a true clinical depression, the benefits of treatment outweigh the potential risk to the fetus. It is much more difficult to manage depression that occurs during pregnancy. You wean them down to the lowest effective dose and leave it at that
