The value of a widescreen format depends a lot upon what size display you get and its resolution. I'm typing this on a Sony 17" widescreen with 1920x1200 resolution (WUXGA). The widescreen format enables me to have two full-sized browser windows (or Word documents) open side by side. Typically the only applications you want to maximize to full screen are Excel or development apps like Flash, Dreamweaver or Photoshop that use a lot of panes and floating menus.
