Well Eloi, mostly when a relationship has broke up its very difficult to getting it back together. Unless your relationship broke up has a deal before or for some good reasons that both of you remain friend first. If he really likes you, i dont think he will hurt you at the first place and both of you will not broke up.
As you said he did hurt you before and you are very sure that you dont wan to give him chance to hurt you again, and this dont you think that you already have the answer?
Dont stick to your past, leave that as a memory and move on to your new life. I'm sure all your friends will be happy for you :D
