I was active on GaiaOnline some couple of years ago. Yes, dressing up avatars is nice, but back then, the only way you can earn gold is by surfing and posting at the forums. Sure, it's easy since one click is equal to one gold, but I hated the spam I saw. I heard there are other ways of earning gold now, but... I don't know. The magic is gone for me.
