I totally agree with you. I think if people travel to a country and learn the basic phrases the native people will respect the traveller way more. I have seen this before and the natives are way more firendly to you as well if you try to speak to them in their language. I think some natives even think it is rude of the traveller to expect them to speak the travellers language. But I think even if you just try and they see it doesn't work they are more willing of speaking english or in your language with you. :D
