The best book I ever read

Everyone has a favorite book - even if it's just for the moment. Let's exchange "best book" stories here, so we can all enjoy them! I am looking for recommendations from real people - not the media.

By the way, my favorite book is "Illusions" by Richard Bach.

My favourite book

There are so many books I love, but a book I read recently which has become one of my all time faves is "The Turning" by Tim Winton.

I've read a lot of his books, and think this is his best. As soon as I finished the book, I turned the cover back and immediately began re-reading it, which I've never done before. I just didn't want to leave the world of the book, or the characters.

Has anyone read Doctors by Erich Segal. Infact I started to respect doctors more after reading this book...it tells about the life of doctors right from the beginning with great passion!

I can't resist reading If Tomorrow Comes, by Sydney Sheldon, it has all the emotions in...

More suggestions for bookworms

Another book I really love is The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.

It has a very strange structure - almost like a series of drafts of the book strung together like a tapestry, so the same story is told over and over again, but each time you gain a new perspective.

The conclusion is horrifying, but told with incredible compassion - it depicts the consequences of the caste system in India.

It's not really a book. Phillip K. Dick's short stories collection (all volumes). Everything is in there, no need to say more.

Short stories

Lots of great novelists also write collections of short stories. If you read a lot of novels, reading short stories makes a nice break.

I recently read a great collection of stories by Margaret Attwood, and I love the short stories by Peter Carey. Gabriel Garcia Marquez also published a book of short stories which are quite obscure and difficult to read, but worth the effort.

I also love Stephen King's short stories - in fact, I like them a lot more than his novels. They're more sci-fi than horror, and they're a lot more psychologically intriguing. Most are published under the name 'Richard Bachman'.

The Little Women

It's a book about 4 women, I dont remember much, but I know it's my favourite one.

I read it when I was very young, at a very impressionable age, and it made an impact on me.

I searching for the book so that I might read it again, but no luck yet.

10lbs Penalty

This Book by Dick Francis was great. At first form the title , I thought it would be about horses. When I know it has abit of politics in it, i was about to (urgh!)

But then, when I read, I love it immeadiately! Not only it was humorus(sarcasm mostly) but it managed to connect the politics strategies, and horse-racing with normal lifes. Once I read it, there's no way of stopping!

And I was a politics and horse-racing anti when I read this.

I am more inclined towards fantasy and historical novels, and I do not really have one specific favorite. I do have a favorite author, and that is Ursula K. LeGuin. I discovered her Wizard of Earthsea when I was in college. It was just a trilogy back then. I read all three books in one sitting, and I got enamored with her writing style. Then I got a-hold of The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness, and that became the start of my collecting her books and short stories.
