Is it really true that a person should know at least a little French to get around Montreal? Is it polite to at least make an attempt at speaking French, or should I just avoid it if I'm not any good at it?

French are always very passionate and loud when they speak, so, I'm not sure whether I should speak the language poorly, or use sign language instead lol
You will find if you atleast attempt to speak French and explain you do not speak the language well. The people of Montreal or Quebec for that matter will gladly speak English.
