New York City - one of the most exciting cities in the world

New York City is one of the most exciting cities in the world! You name it, we've got it. I moved here last year, and I have to put a plug in for my new town. If you want to get the lowdown on the best places to go, read "The Insider's Guide to New York." Have fun!

As an actual resident of the Big Apple, I have a question for you: Which is the real New York - the one in "Sex and the City" or the one in "Law and Order.'

In Sex and the City, New York seems like just one big, happy village where everyone is always bumping into friends on the street.

In Law and Order, New York is just littered with corpses, blood stains everywhere, police tape blocking off major portions of the city and sirens always howling in the background.

In Sex and the City, women can walk freely any time of day or night; in Law and Order, the second they head out the door they are raped or murdered.

I'm hoping for the village version of New York. Does that exist?

what an interesting question
hmmm, why didn't I think of that?

the NY city portrayed in Sex & the city is really a heaven to live in I think
everything is so cool, the people are great, the buildings are great, the food, the clubs, everything

I even make it a point to travel there and stay for a month or two, or more in the future, hope it's really that great,

well, which version is the real new york then?

We don't have HBO, so we're just now getting around to watching SATC in syndication. Last night featured a scene where Carrie was walking around a park by herself at three in the morning - and seemed totally fine with it.

Just after that was a Law and Order episode featuring a serial rapist who had the city trembling in fear.

I think we all long for a "cosmopolitan village" of sorts - one where we can find all the finer things in life along with that feeling of what we think village life was like. But we also fear that it doesn't exist - that maybe its like the Law and Order version of New York.

I was also wondering if New York might have just changed quite a lot since L&O started - back in 1990, I think. If I remember right, crime rates were much higher there back then than they are now - and certainly the perception of the city has changed since then. Perhaps L&O is just working from a reference point that is now 16 years old.
