Apprentice adept series
The Apprentice Adept series by Piers Anthony is an excellent science fiction/fantasy read. It has some mature themes to it, so if your kids are reading it, you might want to read ahead of them to make sure they are mature enough for some of it. This is a different style for Anthony, as there's none of his penchant for puns (as with the Xanth series), but still very readable.
