Here is the deffinition of the word Christian and it's inline with what you said.
Christian:Christianos, khris-tee-an-os'; from Greek 5547 (Christos); a Christian, i.e. follower of Christ :- Christian.
Howeer it is possible to be a follower of Jesus and not be a child of God. A child of God goes much deeper than just following Jesus. A child of God is one that has the Spirit of God dwelling in him or her.
Romans 8:15 (KJV)
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Galatians 4:6 (KJV)
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
The word "Adoption" in Romans 8 verse 15 is incorrect; the proper wording should be as sons, or in the position as sons. One cannot be born again as it says in another place, and at the same time be considered an adopted son.
