Car transmission troubles

So here is whats going on for all those that might be able to help me.
I was driving along and was trying to go up this steep hill when my car slipped out of gear and it started to rev really high like in the red zone for maybe 5 seconds. After that I noticed a really funny smell and after I let the car sit for a while I noticed a small little pool about the size of a softball. No more than that has been noticed but it is raining so it could have gotten washed away.

Anyhow, I know that reving the engine is not the best for the engine but am I going to be out like a lot of money on this one or what? I mean the car I am driving is a stick shift mazda and well yeah needs some work lets just say that.

Should I get a new car or what? Any suggestions would be most beneficial. Thank

I think it would be easier for you to decide once you bring that mazda to a technician and get their quotation for repairing it, either way, even if you do trade it in and buy a new one, shouldn't you at least fix it first before you do so?

In that case, I recommend that you show the car to a technician first, know the budget, and plan your own budget as to how much a new car would cost you and see where it leads, you'll be surprised, it all would seem so logical after that, and you'll go, "hey, why didn't I think of that" most likely lol
