Knowing which grade of motor oil to use in your car
A car is capable of running on nearly any type of oil.
One rule is clear don't put petrol oil in a diesel car.
High performance engines need synthetic oil due to the way the engine works. They are usually pushed very hard therefore the oil needs to last.
Standard petrol engines in general use 15w40. If you have 16 valves for example use 10w30.
If you drive a lot in town and you stop and start your engine often you need the same 10w30.
Everything depends upon the type of engine and the type of driving.
My advice is this. Newish car petrol or diesel 10w30 or similar.
Old cars with a lot of leaks, the cheapest you can find
