Installing a sound card hard?

When I bought my computer from hp I got the integrated sound card that they give. I don't really like it and want to purchase a new one, so I have a few questions. Is it hard to install a sound card? How much should I pay to get a decent sound card? Also, is it true that integrated sound cards usually make your computer slower..?
