What is a Vtec technology engine and how does it work?

Wassup people
just got a question bout vtecs from Honda

so, wat's this vtec thing, how does it work
i read some brochures about it but it's difficult to really know it when copywriters polished it so well for advertising, so technically, in raw terms easily understood, wat's vtec guys?

Honda VTEC Engines

Honda VTEC Engines

Dear ILuvMcDs,

VTEC = Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control.

What is Vtec?
A mechanism for optimizing the air/fuel mixture flow through the engine.

You see, to make an engine more powerful, there are many ways to do it. And you don't need VTEC technology for an engine to run like a monster. However, for normal drivers out there, we don't need the high power all the time, but in certain occasions, it'll be great to have that kind of raw power too.

This is where VTEC comes in.
Smooth operation at low RPMs, and high power output at high RPMs. Technically, this is done by opening the engine valves nice and wide at high RPMs, but open them not as much at low RPMs. It's nothing magical really, but VTEC engines is extremely effective at achieving its design goal, which is to have maximum performance at high RPMs and smooth operation when changing to low RPMs.

I can give you pages of technical descriptions if you're interested, just worried that it might bore you that's all lol

PS: I love McDs too lol

I think only Honda cars have VTEC engines, other cars have similar ones but definitely not called VTEC, so look up Honda cars, talk to a dealer and you'll find out lots of info on VTEC engines, ;)
