I'm not sure I got it from your message but do you care about your friend in a more than friends way? He did propose so it leads me to think that the two of you are at least more involved than the average friends would be. If your current boyfriend is an egoist why not break it off with him and talk with your friend about making your relationship more involved and see where it goes? If you do think you have more involved feelings for your friend it might be worth a try.
