With the rising prices of oil, production of ethanol, based on corn is booming. Amid this, lawmakers from sugar-producing U.S. states are hoping that growers of beet and cane will soon shift o producing renewable fuel.
But, how viable will the conversion of sugar into ethanol be? Around July 1, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to issue a long-awaited study on this. Citing Brazil as the model for producing ethanol from sugar cane is not that easy — as sugar is much cheaper here, compared to that in the United States.
So, the question remains — will the economics of sugar-based ethanol work in America?
