Metacafe, the popular Israeli video-sharing site, has taken a hefty $15 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and Accel Partners - on top of an original investment from Benchmark of $5 million. Metacafe, which launched in 2003, is the 80th biggest site in the world by Alexa and the fourth biggest video site in the UK market (exact stats for the US aren’t available). The company employs more than 50 people and the site and the desktop application combined result in 280 million video streams per month. Unlike YouTube, Google Video, MySpace Video, Yahoo Video, Uncut Video, MotionBox and other long-tail sites, Metacafe applies algorithmic filters to pick out the top videos - only a small number appear on the site each day.
