500GB Discs....Can This Be True?

"It seems that the future holds a whole lot more than 25 to 54 GB on a single disc as in the Blu-ray Technology. According to T3: Pioneer goes beyond Blu-Ray, Pioneer is developing an optical disc that will blow away the hard disc in most of our PCs in terms storage capacity, holding 500 GB of data. How so? Pioneer's lasers are ultraviolet, which have an even shorter wavelength than the blu-ray."

That's kind of strange that the technology uses ultraviolet lasers since ultraviolet will ruin the data on a burned CD/DVD. Also is the technology fast is what I wonder. 500GB really does seem like a lot because single layer DVD's are 4.7GB so 500GB is much more. Wasn't there a debate and some other company didn't want to go Blueray? I wonder if it was Pioneer?

You can never stop an idea whose time has come.

Besides, when these discs are commercially available, hopefully in a couple of years, there are applications waiting in the wings that currently can't even be contemplated, that require huge disk space ... HDTV based movies being one of those.

Hardrives will only get bigger, I cant wait until they come out with the TB hard disk. Mines is only 40 and I want to buy a new one but Ebay makes them so expensive. So I might settle with an external one. I run out of HD space all the time.
