I think the coolest notebook are Sony Viao's

They are very thin and lightweight and they do have some resale value later.

It really depends what you are going to do with it.

Is is a desktop replacement or just a travel pc?

-Wireless networking can be nice for someone who is in a city that has wireless internet.

-Notebooks are slower than regular PC's due to size and power restrictions. Everything is intregrated lowering performance.

-Battery life is an issue with notebooks. Best to get a notebook with a large Lithium ion or nickle metal hydride battery. 4000mah at least

-Some notbooks have overheating problems and burn your legs and lap when you put it on there.

If I knew more about what your computing needs are I could be more specific.

It seems like you really don't need the powerful or new of a notebook. If you are just going to use it at home it doesn't seem to matter to you.

I'm not really impressed with many notebooks.

I've serviced HP, Compaq, Toshiba, IBM, Toshiba, Dell, Acer, Zenith, Apple, Sony, ect...

One company gave me a new IBM and they was good. Although I bought an old IBM and it was a pain to configure. It required a special boot disk for service.

I'd say go with an affordable notebook with a long warranty. If something like the LCD or mainboard goes and it's out of warr. Then you could just throw it away.

Well , a good notebook can be any , that really depends on your needs , for some college kinds work as you said , you should specify the real needs because some courses in computer science may require high end applications like some developer studios to be run and other courses may not really require you something major . Also there is difference if you are using it for purely surfing purposes . So go for a powerful configuration with a good processor and ram for high end applications .
