Do you learn a language before you travel to the country ?

Do you learn the language of the country you are travelling to before your travel ? Or do you just go hoping they will speak your language ? If you try to learn the language how long before your trip you start learning it ?

I think it is always nice to learn the language of the country you go before your travel. You just never know if the people will speak your language or english. But I also think that when you are in the country you will pick up some words, at least some people do

I believe it is better for people to learn at least the basic phrases of the language spoken in the country they are going to visit. Not only will these phrases help the person get around and go places, but this will also help the tourist win the respect of the people native to that country.

I totally agree with you. I think if people travel to a country and learn the basic phrases the native people will respect the traveller way more. I have seen this before and the natives are way more firendly to you as well if you try to speak to them in their language. I think some natives even think it is rude of the traveller to expect them to speak the travellers language. But I think even if you just try and they see it doesn't work they are more willing of speaking english or in your language with you. :D
