Unorthodox job hunting that works

You want to know how to get that job you always wanted? Well, some inside secrets have been circulating now for a while on documentaries and the news media on employment. And I think the best tip I've heard so far is: 'Find the job you want, enquire if there were any opportunities to work for free on a volunatary basis that is...in most cases, there will be such opportunities...take it, prove yourself in the job and after you've proven your worth, make another enquiry...this time asking for a paid position...!
works all the time...try it out.

Summie.

Haha, you again, 115 posts, got your eyes on the iPod?
I think your strategy is a sure win thing, everybody loves free things, but then again, is it worth the time really, working for free, if you're a fresh grad, perhaps it'll work, but once you've got commitments, and having commitments do happen at a very young age these days, do you think it'll still be worth it to work for free like that? probation period for 3-6 months equals 3-6 months of no income my friend, think again

Well, as you might have read, winning the iPod isn't all about posts. You got to have the luck of the draw as well and apparently, you have to pray really hard to win that. Anyway, I think the work for free strategy is good for people who may be having trouble getting a job. Ofcourse, I wouldn't recommend it as a plan A strategy right after you graduate. I'd recommend it as a plan B strategy most definitely! Do you get me?

I applaud you on this summie!
There's the story of the fella who really needed a job. Had been walking by a construction site for a while. One day he decided to just go on in and start working. He picked grabbed a whell barrow and cleaned started to gather everything that was laying around wheeled it to the garbage container.
He did that for two weeks. After two weeks the construction manager came up to him and asked him if he worked for the Company. The fella said "No not yet" He got put on the payroll that same day.

And you're right it's not about the iPod, it's about helping others.

Prove your worth

Well said onesoul!

The main point here is that you got to prove yourself before you can expect monetory benefits.

I think that is a great tip. And who's to say that if you're in between jobs you can't take a volunteer position and still keep looking for something else in case the freebis job doesn't work out. At least it keeps your mind fresh and in the field you want and you'll have more experience to put on your resume so it doesn't look like you've just been lazy and out of work.

Volunteer jobs also widen your network. Wide networks can bring in all sorts of opportunities sometimes.

I definitely agree with that. Anyone you can impress and connect with will help you down the line. Even if the direct networking doesn't provide an opportunity -- your mentors can always sever as great references.
