Compaq presario display problem

Hi,
i own a compaq presario notebook, its almost now 5yrs since i bought the laptop. Problem is the display is very dim, blurred images and text appear on the screen, its happening from the past one month, day by day the display is getting more dim, i suppose the problem would be with the LCD screen or something else. I tried changing the settings but it didnot have any effect on it. I would like to know what is the problem, and if i have to replace the LCD how much would it cost for me.

Thanks,
Bindu

I used to manage a computer service dept. compaq authorized service center and was it's sr. technician before that. I'm sure it's the display. Bad news for you that with laptop displays or mainboards ordered from a parts supplier will cost more that the laptop is worth ($500 maybe). I've had to give this news a few times to cutomers so I know how disheartening it is. You can try getting a display or a parts laptop from ebay and have a service center put it in for you. Laptop repair is not for the novice. They should be able to put it with just an hours charge. Plus if they crack the plastic bezel or break it in some manner they'll be paying the replacement bill for you.

If those options are not for you put it up on ebay as a parts laptop or take out parts yourself and get more money (hard drive, RAM, optical drives, mainboard, floppy, add-in cards, battery) . You could then get a used similar laptop on ebay for $100-300 depending. Geeks.com sometime sells used laptops in this price range.
