About dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP)

To configure an Intranet, IP addresses can be provided in two ways i.e. Statically by network administrators and Dynamically using DHCP servers.

Any computer in a network that needs an IP address sends a DHCP request to a DHCP server, which responds to the request by allocating IP address to client host.

Re: DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Hey man can you also tell us how do DHCP assigns an IP address to its client. I mean is the IP address fixed of a system or it is dyanamically assigned by the server.
If it is varriable then how does it identify the system because my feeling is that a PC is identified(in a network) by its IP address.
If it is fixed then what is the advantage of having a DHCP server for identifying the IP addresss over manually IP configured PC.
Do you have the answers to the querry?
Humpty is correct. You have given the information in very short like you are also confused. Please clarify us.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Hi,
I was going through the computer lounge topics and DHCP topic caught my eye.

I would like to answer chrisdavid's questions -

DHCP as the name itself indicates assigns IP addresses dynamically to DHCP clients. DHCP clients are your systems connected to the network, IP addresses are assigned by DNS server. you are right PC is identified by its IP address. DNS server keeps track of all the IP addresses assigned and it can identify its client.
Advantage of assigning address dynamically -
DHCP service runs on a central server that dynamically assigns an IP address to individual PCs or workstations . This protocol delivers IP information on a local area network (LAN) or across several LANs. DHCP reduces the work spent administering statically assigned IP addresses on a large network. For example, the administrator does not have to visit each workstation on the network to configure it or manually make changes to its IP address if there is a network topology change. Other network configuration parameters (such as gateway and DNS, Domain Name Services) can be passed along to a workstation with the IP.

Hope so this information helps.

Regards,
Bindu

Re: DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Sorry for being late here.
That means the IP address are unique and remain the same every day.
Now, what if I change my IP address manualy.
Will it effect the network works, will I be able to transfer or recieve files over the network.
